A St. Petersburg woman is launching a women's sports magazine tailored to cover everything from Super Mom triathletes to tips for women on balancing their running routines with raising children and working.
"Women are different from men, and we want to cover things that they can't get elsewhere," said Dawna Stone, 35, publisher of Her Sports.
Stone's inaugural 80-page March-April issue will hit newsstands Feb. 24. The national magazine will be published every two months in 2004, then 10 times in 2005. Her Sports will cost $16.95 for six issues this year, or $4.99 on the newsstand.
Stone, a Los Angeles native and University of California at Berkeley graduate, said the magazine is targeting women who like running, mountain biking, triathlons, skiing, snowboarding, hiking and surfing. She said the magazine is not trying to help women lose 5 pounds in one week or flatten their abs.
Stone declined to divulge start-up costs, except to say she's talking with potential investors and that she has self-funded the first 54,000 copies that were printed this week. Stone is a former Morgan Stanley financial analyst and management consultant who completed the grueling Ironman Hawaii triathlon in 1999.
Stone will rely on a staff of eight, plus freelance writers, to produce the magazine.
Advertisers include L'Ore'al, EggBeaters, Balance Bars and Coca-Cola.
The magazine is based at 245 Central Ave., Suite C, in St. Petersburg. Its Web site is www.hersports.com, which includes a free newsletter.
